How your Pennsylvania paycheck is calculated

  1. Federal income tax. Your pay minus the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 for single filers, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household) is taxed in brackets from 10% to 37%.
  2. Social Security. 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 in 2026.
  3. Medicare. 1.45% of all pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 ($250,000 for married filing jointly).
  4. Pennsylvania income tax. 3.07% of pay after no deduction (the state has none).

For married filing jointly the calculator assumes one earner and counts two personal exemptions where the state gives them. Contributions to a 401(k) reduce income tax but not Social Security or Medicare.
